Chronic Stuffy Nose, Nasal Polyps and Fungus : Target Health Global
By Gabe Mirkin, MD, December 14, 2009 - Chronic sinus infections associated with nasal polyps are difficult to heal because doctors do not know what causes them. Nasal polyps are small finger-like, fluid-filled blisters, often associated with asthma and serious reactions to aspirin. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found fungi in 96 percent of people with chronic sinusitis (1).
A symposium shows that sinus infections caused by fungi are common in people with defective immunity such as HIV and hepatic C (2-13).Injections against allergies and antihistamines have not been shown to control the combination of chronic stuffy nose, nasal polyps and sinus infections that do not vary throughout the season. Doctors treat this condition with cortisone, which suppress the runny nose, headache and nasal congestion a bit, but never cure the patient and may even place the patient for worsening symptoms over the years.
The most common fungi are Alternaria, Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Candida and Fusarium. A sinus cat scan will tell whether a person has a sinus infection.If the cat scan shows fluid levels indicating a sinus infection, the doctor should order a culture of mushroom truffle. If culture is positive for fungi, the doctor should consider treatment with antifungal drugs, although there are no good studies to show the antifungal drugs sinusitis cure, because the current treatment of cortisone works only in the short term, and shortens life by osteoporosis, hypertension and obesity. If the fungus infection is positive, the person must be treated with appropriate anti-fungal medication such as Sporanox, Lamisil or Diflucan.People with positive skin tests to molds are most likely to suffer asthma attacks so severe they require hospitalization (14).
If your nose is stuffy during the pollen season in spring and fall, check with an allergist. Allergy injections can help control your symptoms. If your stuffy nose started after puberty, you do not have allergies and your nose is stuffy 12 months a year, allergy injections usually are ineffective. Antihistamines and decongestant pills help control your symptoms a little. Cortisone-type pills are highly effective but have side effects, such as obesity and osteoporosis.Cortisone sprays of nasal type are safer than pills. Physicians are continually seeking improved ways to treat people with chronically stuffy nose and running. Two articles offer new treatments for a chronic stuffy nose: a nasal pepper spray and injection of an anesthetic and type of cortisone in the nerves of the nose. Many people find relief with saline irrigation, using various devices that are readily available in pharmacies, check with your doctor or pharmacist for their recommendations....
Sleep Apnea PSA | Sleep Apnea
I just put on a dust mite mattress cover, & it has cleared up my chronic stuffy nose of 20+ years! I think the pillow covers help too. I also cleared out everything in my bedroom & the surrounding area, got rid of particle board furniture, & use the Neti Pot … I drink distilled water, eat organic fruits & veg, & have gotten rid of fragrances in soaps & cleaning products (lookup uses of Borax, baking soda, & salt). I try to get rid of environmental contaminants that are all around us today.
I just went to my sleep study last night, and the doctors called today and said I have severe sleep apnea. I know how this man feels. This is nothing to mess around with, it can kill you. The sad part is, if you should die from this, it can be missed and documented as, death of natural causes. Please see your doctor as soon as possible the CPAP machine will change your life and even save it.

what could be causing a chronic stuffy nose?
My boyfriend suffers from chronic congestion and / or runny nose. It lasted for months or even years. It comes on when it gets cold - for example, his body may be hot but in a certain area of his body becomes a project, as his feet, and he will immediately start sneezing and your nose is streaming. He often gets headaches and pressure now complains of an earache. He has not caught a cold because it's not like this all the time. It is very frustrating and tends to occur during the night, which awakens us upward. This is not bed bugs because bed is brand new.It does not seem to be an allergy because it is not something that could be causing an allergy - he recently moved and had the same thing in his old home too.
Ideas?
Looks like his sinuses, he must contact the doctor really. Although some extreme cases of hay fever may cause similar problems, better controlled anyway; D
PS This is a very lucky man to have a girlfriend of compassion, I hope he knows how lucky he is.
How do I cure my child's chronic stuffy nose?
My son has allergies and it always leads to nasal congestion lasting weeks or ends in a sinus infection that we need to get antibiotics.
Allergies are best treated by avoidance where possible and reduce the inflammatory response that is when an allergic person is exposed to an allergen. If it is a big problem that you may want to consider allergy testing to identify their triggers and see if you can eliminate some of its environment. Daily drugs for inflammation like Singulair and nasal steroid sprays may also be useful. And using a saline nasal spray several times a day is a very good complement. Avoid compounds menthol and nonprescription decongestants like Afrin or Vick's for chronic symptoms as they can cause rebound congestion.

has anyone taken their infant to a ENT for a chronic stuffy nose?
baby has had a stuffy nose since her four month check up and she is five months now..I have tried saline.
Yes we did. I actually have another follow up appointment. The doc said he had some drainage in his ears, but nothing much to do. We did get a nebulizer used with Pulmicort form his ped and I bought a cool mist humidifier which all have helped so much with congestion and coughing.
is there anything that can be done for chronic stuffy nose?
i've noticed recently that my nose is almost always stuffy and i haven't had a cold or anything that would cause it to be stuffy in months. is there anything i can do to make it stop? it also makes me sound slightly nasal and it's quite annoying.
There are two great ways to get rid of a chronic stuffy nose:
Use Steam: http://www.ehow.com/how_5399957_unclog-s inus-cavity-using-steam.html
Use Nasal Irrigation: http://www.ehow.com/how_5400012_use-irri gation-nasal-allergy-relief.html
I've linked some how to's for you. Hope you feel better!!!
You might benefit from from something like tylenol sinus, but not for everyday as decongestants can have long term side affects.
Why do i have a chronic stuffy nose?
Every day for the past 10 months or so, i wake up with a stuffy nose. it bugs me all throughout the day. when this first started happening, i had wheezing, too. i don't know what could be causing this. i don't think it's allergies, because i've tried taking allergy medication and it hasn't worked. i took zyrtec. i'd really like to be able to breathe freely through my nose again...
thanks for your help.
You have a fungus that keeps growing in the sinus. Get treated with Nystsatin or Difucan.
Otherwise your brains may get it and blow up.
Has anyone every had a chronic stuffy nose?
I have had this stuffy nose now for several months, and just when I think its going away, POOF, it reappears... I can't cut my nose off and because I am an epileptic, i can't take meds or they cause seizures... any suggestions?
I, too, have chronic stuffy nose. It doesnt matter what I do, it's constantly stuffy. Of course, I have year round allergies and bad sinuses run in the family. My suggestion to you, is go to your doc and talk to him about getting your sinuses cleaned. He'll know what you're talking about. It may be the only thing to do since you are epileptic.
I have a chronic stuffy nose, why is it when I'm out in the cold weather I can breathe?
Inside I can't I have to use nasal sprays continuously
happens wherever I am I know it's allergy but I want to know why the cold air helps?
Sounds like an allergy to something indoors. Does it happen in ANY building?
**ETA**It's not necessarily that the cold air helps. Being away from the allergen, the symptoms are just stopping. For some people the change is instant once the offending substance is removed.
5 mo has chronic stuffy nose! Any remedies? Anyone go through this with a child?
We've tried decongestant (doesn't work), humidfier (nope), saline drops and suction (works for a few hours at night), keeping him propped up at night and during the day, etc. What else can we do? This started over a month ago. He isn't sick at all... just has the stuffy nose.
His father was the same way as a child and does not have allergies. I know things have changed since he was a child, too. I think he, unfortunately, just had to suffer through it.
very normal.go to dr. first because for small babies its always good to take little more precaution.what u can do at home is give him steam .u can make him sit near humidifier for 4-5 mins 3-4 times during the day and use some vicks in it.it will help in opening his nasal passages.u can buy saline solution like little nose.it will sooth him.
Chronic Stuffy Nose!!!?
So for my entire life I've had Chronic Stuffy Nose (I think that's what it's called). But basically for a few months at a time my nose would be anywhere from 75% to 100% closed for most of the day. The only way i can get it to open up again is if i get my heart pumping or use this nasal spray called Afrin. Although the Afrin gives me allergic reactions which are just as bad as a stuffy nose. I take Claritan D 24 past the recommended dosage and my nose is still persistent on being stuffed. Is there anything i can do?? I' m sick of this!
My wife has had a similar problem. We tried this nasal drain thing called a neti pot. We bought it at CVS. It is a saline solution that you drain through your sinus's and it heals a protects the membranes with out any drugs. It has worked very well. It may be weird at first, but it works. Use warmer water to help it relax the nasal membrane more. She uses it once in the evening and so far has not found anything that works better. Look it up on the web.
I can't get rid of this chronic stuffy nose!?
I have been suffering from a chronic stuffy nose for months. I have completely abused the use of nasal sprays to a point where I needed them to breathe through my nose. Lately the nasal sprays don't work. I have been using a neil med (neti-pot) for a while now as it's safe and gets rid of lots of impurities. It works for all of 2 minutes and I'm right back to being completely stuffed up. I can't breathe through my nose at all. Even if I blow my nose it goes back to completely stuffed instantly. I can't sleep with my mouth open because then it gets dry and my throat hurts (I don't mean to sound complainey) but I am much more comfortable breathing through my nose.
I have read up on chronic sinusitis and all that but it doesn't seem to apply with the time frame. Was wondering when if anyone had any suggestions on home remedies that would work to help relieve it while I wait to make an appointment with my doctor.
I have tried nasal sprays, neti pot, saline sprays, steam with tea tree oil, allergy medication, heating pad on my face... you name it I've tried it, it's driving me nuts.
Help!!! It's preventing me from sleeping now:(
I did stop using the nasal sprays, the neti pot was supposed to help clear everything out, it doesn't damage the lining of your nose and it's safe and non addictive.
of this and see your doctor.
Can allergies cause a stuffy nose without the sneezing, runny nose and itching?
Usually when I think of allergies, I think of a runny nose, itchy eyes/throat and sneezing. I have none of these symptoms. I just have a year round chronic stuffy nose. I tested positive for allergies. Or do you think I have a condition known as vasomotor/non allergic rhinitis causing my year round stuffy nose?
yes, i have them myself.my symptoms usually are stuffy nose and some sneezing with red watery eyes.Cats will trigger this for me.
Anyone's baby ever had this combo? Clogged tear duct, chronic stuffy nose, small ear canal? All on one side?
If so, what was the solution? My son is 9 months, and we have to go to the ENT to see if they can see into his ear. It seems to me that there is some kind of blockage on one side of his face, connected to the tear duct, the nose, and the ear. The other side is totally fine, and the other is always stopped up, runny, and uncomfortable for him. Anyone else with this problem?
Poor guy! None of my kids ever had all that at once. Good luck making him better!

What can I do for chronic sinusitis, or stuffy nose which keeps me awake at night.?
I'm using steroid nasal sprays. I do saline rinses. I take antihistamines. The only thing that really helps is Afrin, and we're not supposed to use that too much. I'm actually an RN, it's not like I'm ignorant about a lot of the alternatives. It doesn't bother me much during the day, but it interferes with my sleep. If anyone has ideas, I'm sure willing to listen. Thanks.
Apple cider vinegar every day helps.
Garlic oil capsules (odourless) every day help.
Avoiding mucus generating foods such as dairy products helps. Perhaps you could switch to soy milk.
The natural antibiotic colloidal silver also helps.
Prescription antibiotics and nasal sprays only give you a bit of temporary relief and nasal sprays can actually damage your sinuses.
Postnasal drip, stuffy nose chronic, year round for 5 years.?
Like I said, I've had a stuffy nose and chronic post-nasal drip for about 5 years. Seasons don't affect it. It constantly sounds like I have a clothespin over my nose and it's effecting my voice! I'm a 19 year old male about to enter college, and I do not want Post Nasal Drip to run my life. I can't even talk properly. Im always clearing my throat. And I havn't been able to breathe out of my nose for as long as I can remember.
I am going on a 1 week NO DAIRY diet to see if I am allergic to dairy. I've been to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist before, but I told him I thought my tonsils were causing the problem, so he removed my tonsils. Well, no luck, its been 2 years. I've been on Flonase, nothing. I've taken grape seed extract, nothing. I drink lots of water. I've tried sleeping with my head elevated.
My nose is always stuffed, too. Usually just one nostril, and it switches sides all the time. It's worse in the morning and at night.
Im going to book an appointment with an ENT, but that will probably take about six months...any suggestions before then that I can try? I refuse to sit around and accept this happening to me!
Go and get yourself fully assessed by a naturopath ....... get them to do testing for food allergies/intolerances and chemical sensitivities .......what you ingest and absorb through your skin and breath can have a vast impact on the way you think, the way you feel and your overall health and vitality ....... seriously, you can live a pain free drug free life if only you know precisely what chemicals and foods are upsetting your system .... it could be something as simple as lactose intolerance or an intolerance to processed sugar or wheat ...... disorders from which people suffer due to intolerances to food or chemicals in their diets can cover almost the whole spectrum of physical and mental illnesses ..... an extraordinary concept but mind blowingly true....... do yourself a favor and go and get allergy tested.
Recurring infections such as sinusitis, tonsilitis, ear, respiratory, urinary and so forth, are symptoms of having a delayed allergic reaction to foods that you are eating ....... immediate food allergies give prompt and dramatic evidence of their presence..... delayed food allergies, on the other hand, can be more subtle and difficult to recognise.......... keep a detailed food journal and record the foods you eat and how you feel throughout the day to enable you to recognise the symptoms of a delayed food allergy....... could be milk and dairy products (lactose intolerance) or wheat (coeliac) or even the sugar contained in high sugar fruits such as oranges, apples, bananas, mangoes .
Other symptoms of delayed food allergies are ~
Chronically swollen glands
Chronic digestive problems, including the symptoms of IBS;
Recurring inflammatory conditions, such as gastroinestinal inflammation, arthritis etc.;
Difficulty losing excess weiht;
Unexplained bouts of severe fatigue after eating;
Tendency to hold water that is not associated with the menstrual cycle;
Dark circles under your eyes (sometimes called allergic shiners);
Frequent stuffy nose or postnasal drip that lasts for several hours after meals; also clearing your throat frequently after eating;
Anxiety and heart palpitations withing several hours of eating;
Unexplained skin rashes;
history of gallbladder disease;
history of acne;
history of antiobiotic use;
Mental fogginess after eating;
Bouts of low blood sugar;
headaches ............... read a book called "What your Doctor May Not Tell you About IBS" by Richard N. Ash, M.D. and eliminate your symptoms and live a pain free, drug free life ..
Ditch the milk and dairy products i say ........ many many people find it extremely hard to digest lactose contained in milk and dairy products.
Take a calcium & vitamin D3 rich supplement perhaps in a liquid form (easiest to assimilate) to ensure you get all your calcium on a daily basis ..........and pump up your intake of fresh fish such as salmon and tuna and leafy and green vegies & fresh fruits~ the vegies are rich in both calcium and protein and the fish are rich in magnesium (antistress mineral), protein, EFA's~ essential fatty acids which are also fantastic for lowering blood pressure,levelling out any mood or stress levels you may have and bolstering your immunity, calcium and vitamin D (the vitamin D is essential for effective calcium absorption) .
The calcium found in vegies and fruits has a greater impact on bone health than calcium from dairy products anyways.... a study published in The Americal Journal of clinical nutrition (2002) found that a high intake of vegies and fruits has a positive impact on bone health, but dairy did not.
Dairy products contain animal proteins, which speed the elimination of calcium from the body and make it more acidic. This can cause calcium to leach from the bones and cause problems with magnesium (essential for healthy nerve and muscle functioning and for heart health ~ known as the antistress mineral) absorption, leading to osteoporosis. In addition, we absorb only 30 percent of the calcium found in milk, compared to 40 to 70 percent of the calcium found in vegies and fruits.
pretty disturbing actually when you consider the way the milk and dairy industry pump us with their commercials to drink more milk !!
Cow's milk contains proteins that are difficult for humans to digest; when these undigested proteins enter the lower digestive system, they putrefy and cause digestive problems. Dairy products encourage the production of excess mucus in the body, burdening the respiratory, digestive and immune systems. Not surprisingly, when you ditch the milk and dairy people more often than not experience markedly fewer colds and sinus & respiratory infections.
Lactose intolerance can cause acid reflux, alternating bouts of constipation & diahorrea and will also lead to a compromised digestive system thus laying the groundwork for a body which is extremely susceptible to developing nose, throat, sinus, ear, bronchial, bladder and other infections as well....... Other symptoms of lactose intolerance are mucous in the stools, bloating and cramping, digestive troubles such as constipation, belching and burping, gassiness and wet f*arting (sorry, no other way to say it), ribbony and stringy shaped bowel movements or rabbit pellet shaped movements are all symptoms of lactose intolerance.
Please also ensure that whichever supplement you decide to buy doesn't contain any lactose, wheat, yeast, gluten, preservatives or flavorings, sugar or yeast as none of these have any place in a good quality supplement anyways.
Also, take a good quality probiotic powder supplement before your main meals as this will help with the digestive process by encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract .... probiotics will help to recolonise the beneficial bacteria in your gut ...... it will also help maintain optimal intestinal pH, which, in turn, helps with complete digestion...... probiotics will increase the absorption of minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and sometimes iron too..... they also produce some of the B vitamins, including biotin, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6...... the B vitamins are essential for healthy neural, digestive and immune system functioning.
You have only vibrant health & vitality to gain by ditching the milk and dairy products mate ............. i sincerely do wish you the very best of health & vitality.
peace baby

Has anyone been able to cure a chronic stuffy nose/polyps by natural means, avoiding steroids, surgery, etc?
Breathe in lavender oil, it can really help, now I've helped you can you help me? Click on my name and anserw my question please!!!
no.
feelings of nasal obstruction? acupuncture is the only proven alternative therapy, and that is only for symptomatic relief, and even then it's questionable.
unfortunately, nasal polyposis is a chronic disease.
What are possible reasons for chronic stuffy nose and "full" ear?
I usually sleep on my left side and everyday my left nostril is hard to breathe through. Sometimes it switches to my right side (like right now), but mostly on the left. It feels like I need to blow my nose, but if I try, no matter how hard, I can't get anything to come out, except a trickle of air.
I've also noticed that my left ear feels "full" and maybe to the point where it is hearing loss.
No this is BAD and I know I'm not supposed to but I clean my ear canal with a q-tip. My right ear I have no problem inserting the q-tip, but my left ear the q-tip goes maybe half the way the right side does. I don't want a lecture on how and why you're not supposed to do that, cause I know, but I wanted to see if there was something there, and apparently there is, but what? Is it a blockage?
I feel no pain from my nose or ear. I've also been dealing with this for at least a couple years, that I can remember.
may be a blockage you really should go see a ear nose and throat doctor have you tryed sinus medication or claritan to see if that will help you out best of luck to you with this feel better soon
Does anyone have a "cure" for a chronic stuffy nose? My sinuses are usually stuffed up.?
I moved to a dusty town a few years ago, and the irritants in the air may be part of the problem. Any ideas other than prescription drugs?
Believe it or not: water. Plain pure simple water. Read the "dehydration" website. 6-8 glasses of pure water is highly recommended. I have had an allergy problem all of my life. Now I am allergy free thanks to water. Take 2 tbls. of heinz apple cider vinegar in a glass of water 2-3 x day or if dieting, before a meal for its 93 vitamins and minerals. I now am off any type of medication. Vinegar has cured all of my depression, anxiety and adult acne. Hair and nails become long and strong too. I am 50, but feel 25 thanks to vinegar.
I can't figure out why my nose is always stuffy and tingly?
I have had a chronic stuffy nose with constant tingly for about 8-9 months now. My mother is an allergist and my allergies are under control. I do not have a deviated septum. I have tried every allergy medication and nasal spray possible. I have tried all the other nasal sprays (except Afrin because it is so bad for you) to keep my nasal passages moist. I have tried over the counter cold remedies. I take Sudafed on a regular basis, which helps some.
I can't sleep because I am always so stuffy. My nose constantly tingles, but I rarely sneeze. I have bad phases about 1-2 times a day for an hour or two where I look like I have a really bad cold. However, I don't because this has been going on for almost a year!!
I am miserable and multiple allergists can not figure out what is causing it. Nothing seems to help...
I don't think it is something that can be cured with antibiotics - they have tried that.
How long does recovery from sinus surgery take? Will they be able to drug me to knock me out? I can't consciously sleep without being able to breathe through my nose.
It could be chronic sinisitis, or even a fungus. Sinusitis is remedied with antibiotics and the fungus is remedied with sinus surgery. Go see your Dr- not your allergist, and ask for a sinus CT scan. Good luck!
My 8 yr old son suffers from stuffy nose breathes thru his mouth tosses and turns at night not sleeping well.?
Help! My eight year old son has seasonal allergies. Takes allergy medicine. He has chronic stuffy nose but he also has some discharge at times which is sometimes green. He breathes thru his mouth all the time, at night I occasionally come into his room and have seen how he is just not really resting because he is tossing and turning trying to breathe right, wakes up in the morning with dark circles under his eyes I feel so bad for him because he is a trooper never complains but I can see how hard it is for him to breathe thru his nose. It breaks my heart to see him during the night. I have taken him to different allergist and they have suggested allergy shots during the year but it doesnt seem to help his nose issue. He does take alllergy meds mainly during the spring time but they dont seem to help the nose. I am at my wits end does any one out there have any serious suggestions for me? Thank you
Mom: Since you are more concerned about his night-time behavior and he is showing allergic shiners (the dark circles under his eyes) you should investigate to determine if he is allergic to dust mites.
The highest concentration of dust mites in the home is the bedroom. This is why people with dust mite allergy have a hard time sleeping and are much worse when they wake up in the morning. I will give you a link to read about these microscopic little buggers. I will also give you a link on how to set up a dust free bedroom for him. Finally, I am including a link to some stuff that I use to wash my sheets once a week. I have terrible dust mite allergy, and this stuff makes all the difference in the world. It is called De-mite and I wouldn't wash sheets without it!.
The good news is that dust mite allergy is controllable. It just takes a little education and a little work and a little investment, but boy the rewards are worth it. Check it out...it may just be what your little trooper needs.
Does he has a fever? If you are giving him tylenol or something he wont show the fever. i'll suggest nasal spary, nasonex or nasocort. couple of puff in each nose before going to bed. also if its green production may be should visit the doctor.
Can try over the counter decongestant nasal spray as your first choice (if is he not taking any tylenol like product and no fever).
do call the doctors office to make sure whatever he is taking is not overlapping with the over the counter decongestant.
also if he is using nasal decongestant already then may be try a different one (everyone is different, and everyone respond differently to a different drug)
Hope he feels better :)
I get chronic colds. Once every 2-4 weeks I get a soar throat, runny/stuffy nose, ear pain. Any ideas of why?
If you suffer from colds often then it is obvious that your body is trying to tell you something.
The first things I would consider looking into is your tonsils and adnoids.
Once you have covered that these are not the cause of problems for you I would consider that you may have a problem with digestion, causing allergic reactions.
One of the most effective ways to correct this problem would be to take digestive enzymes prior to each meal and improve your diet switching to more natural foods.
Dairy products could be a problem for you. You might consider elliminating dairy products for 30 days to see how you feel when you are not eating dairy. Dairy is the cause of much of the mucus build up in our body.
Are you following the "rules" to stay well. Eating well (mostly natural foods, not processsed), plenty of exercise, rest, drinking 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces of water and reducing stress? These are all things that build your immune system.
Also proper hygene is very important. Remember to wash your hands often because your hands come into contact with germs constantly throughout the day.
One last thing that helps many people is taking a supplement with antioxidants......do not believe that this alone will replace a healthy diet, it is to be used along with a healthy diet for maximum results.
