NW Brewing News – Winter Beer Tasting Panel Results
Winter time in the Northwest means it's time to duck into a bar and dry off the rain with a pint of beer, or sit in front of the fireplace at home with a glass of your Warm winter favorites and some good conversation. Brewers go from Oktoberfests and craft beers in their crops and take on what is usually a malt in pre-season in winter. The colder weather is also a perfect time to leave the big stout and start dabbling with Barleywine.
The tasting panel was made blind and consisted of Geoff Kaiser (Brewing News, Northwest), Joel Vandenbrink (Two Beers Brewing), Tyler Pickel (Two Beers Brewing), Alex Dittmar (mixing Airways), and Colin Lenfesty ( BJCP judge).
Rating: Rating: 4.0
This strong dark beer is about as good an example of the style you find in the NW. It grows on a cob, caramel base with some black fruit. Significant but not overwhelming heat of the alcohol will help you forget the cold in a pinch. It manages to be big and bold, but it is still incredibly drinkable at 6.5% vol. Nicely done.
Nectar Ales Black Xantus Rating: 4.0
This huge 11% ABV Imperial Stout has been aged in American oak barrels and then infused with organic coffee. The barrel features, coffee, and stout base added equally to the final product, and the result is absolutely decadent. Chocolate, coffee, coconut, vanilla and liquor all together in this new version of the brewery Firestone Walker Ales Nectar /. One judge thought the flavors of coconut have been a bit overwhelming, though. After one year of age to smooth the intensity of alcohol, this could be a 4.5.
Laurelwood Vinter Varmer Rating: 4.0
This huge 12.7% has been brewed with molasses and maple syrup and then aged in oak barrels. It pours dark with a creamy head. The flavor of roasted malt is huge with a few grapes, soy, chocolate and coffee. The fact the bulk of the work, with the barrel just adding a little complexity. Surprisingly creamy mouth....
Bad economy hits 'real' housewives
NEW YORK - Peculiar things happened this season on "The Real Housewives of Orange County."
Gretchen Rossi had a garage sale, Jeana Keough went shopping with her daughter at H & M and Tamra Barney is doing his own household.
What?
This is a dramatic turnaround from the third season, when Barney's husband gave her a diamond Rolex for his 40th birthday, Vicky Gunvalson discussed during the purchase of a yacht (she decided against it) and fiance Rossi gave him a Harley.
"They were all very affected by the economic situation," explains executive producer of the show, Douglas Ross.
This means that the downsizing that we see on camera is not just for show. A number of cast members have been involved in real estate has been on a downward trend the last two years. And this season we'll see the family of Lynne Curtin's get evicted from their Laguna Beach home.
"We try to treat it as gently but honestly as we can," said Ross. "We had to have been there with our cameras ... As part of our normal when they were served the eviction notice. It was one of those great reality TV moments happened d 'be taken because we were in the right place at the right time."
Money is a sensitive issue, and some people - even the stars of reality TV - may not want to expose their financial hardship to millions of people. But the housewives did not seem to mind sharing - they even believe himself an inspiration to others in similar situations.
"It helps people across the country because they realize it's not fair," said Keough.
Barney said the exhibition is his being honest.
"I'm pretty open. ... There too, I'll hide. It was difficult for my husband ... but the world in this place right now and I think people will relate to it, "she said.
So far, it looks like Barney is right. Notes for the fifth season has been solid and averaged about 2 million viewers per episode....
The Dutch About to Discover a Cure for Obesity | Slog | The ...
A real possibility does exist for developing a new generation of foods that make people feel full by releasing anti-hunger aromas during chewing, scientists in the Netherlands are reporting after a review of research on that topic. Such foods would fight the global epidemic of obesity with aromas that quench hunger and prevent people from overeating. Their article appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry...
...Molecules that make up a food's aroma apparently do so by activating areas of the brain that signal fullness.
Their analysis found that aroma release during chewing does contribute to the feeling of fullness and possibly to consumers' decisions to stop eating.
