Swine flu vaccines are rolling out this month—finally. Health-care workers in Indiana and Tennessee were the first to get the nose-spray version, while New Yorkers clamoring for the H1N1 vaccine finally had their chance too.

However, the onslaught of information about H1N1—be it playground rumors, employer signs telling you to cover your cough, memos from your kids’ school, or scary-sounding news reports—is making it pretty hard to figure out what you should be doing right now.

Although some people have already been vaccinated, it could be weeks—depending on your age and risk factors—before you even get a chance at the shot (or spray). So now what?

Sometimes it feels like you have two choices. A: Wring your hands endlessly about something over which you have no control. Or, B: Tune out the static and pretend this is all just a horrible dream. (Call it the ignore-the-whole-sorry-mess-until-my-neighbor-is-sick approach.)

Well, guess what? There are a few things you should—and should not—be doing at the moment. Here’s your guide.

Look up local flu outbreaks. If you’re getting most of your news from the Internet—and about 40% of people say they do—you may not be up on H1N1 activity in your community. Take the time to check local flu activity on the online version of your local newspaper (remember those?) or health department, or check out websites like Google Flu Trends (though keep in mind that this map is based on search trends and could be skewed if lots of healthy people are searching for information). There’s also FluTrends , which is produced by Rhiza Labs, and includes past cases and current activity , or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) weekly flu update .

If your city or state is a bit of a hot spot, you may need to focus on some of these to-do points sooner than others. The good news is that some of the hardest hit areas in spring—like New York—don’t seem to have that many H1N1 cases at the moment. (Experts estimate that up to 1 million New Yorkers may have had H1N1 in the spring, which would protect against subsequent infections.)

is it bad to wash a nose piercing more than twice a day?

my piercer told me to wash twice a day. i sometimes do more than that because sometimes I accidentally touch (dont ask how i accidentally touch my nose, its just weird and I do) and she said that the most important part is to not touch it w / dirty hands . Thus, whenever I touch, I wash it. Is this bad? Should I do that twice a day or is it OK if I sometimes do it more?

Yes, it can be bad to wash the piercing more than twice a day. There are bacteria in your body heal wounds and fight infection. More cleaning a piercing can make you more vulnerable to infection than before.

You just need to be very conscious about it and do your best not to touch during the day.

Why does my facial wash make my nose shiny?

I use Clean and Clear Morning Burst Facial Wash for quite a few months now and I love it. It makes me very cool and makes my face feel very soft, but I noticed recently that when I exit the shower, my nose, in particular, is very, very bright. I'm not super oily skin or dry, and I have no acne. It's my facial wash causing this, should I move on?

no its fine. if its operation for you, I wouldnt put it. washing face is really just polishing your skin to do if she is very sweet and elimination of pores and get rid of dead skin which is why its very smooth and shiny. oh and there even could be added to a moisturizer than washing making brilliant.

Allot of people do not even use a wash rag.

I dont use a flannel, but I wash good! I use shower creme and my hands and that does a great job. Once finished (and not going into too much detail), I am beautifully clean!

I am specifically wondering about face washes with 2% salicylic acid. Also, what about face washes with benzoyl peroxide (10%)? I have acne, but I have come a long way to get clear skin with a continued perfection of my daily regimen. But I use acne products, Clean & Clear and Proactive - washes, toner, and lotions. Do you all with pierced noses skip over that side of your nose when you wash, or just wash everything without worrying about it? Does it sting?

Now that my skin is becoming very clear, I would love to get a nose ring. Can I get it pierced and still wash my face with the products I love?!

Should i clean my nose ring with aspirin AND wash it with soap?

I went to my piercer today because i got a tiny kelloid around my nose piercing, and i couldn't put the jewelry back in. He said to clean it with a paste made with aspirin and water. I did that, but should I also wash it in the shower with antibacterial soap? Or is the aspirin enough cleaning?
Henry, i'm pretty sure the piercer knew what he was talking about.

I got my nose pierced recently too, they told me to use this stuff called ivory soap? I don't have any so I use colorless scentless soap to clean it. I don't think you'd have to do both, just make sure you do one or the other regularly. :)
Edit: Never use peroxide & If you're washing your piercings when you get out of the shower, it's because shampoo and conditioner are harsh on piercings most generally. It's not the soap.

I have a peel off face mask, exfoliating face scrub, nose pore pack, and face wash. I know that you use peel face mask every 4-5 days or once a week, and 2-3 days for face scrub. But how to use all the items together? I have a bad case of blackheads which I am desperate to get rid off.

i'd say face scrub, face mask once every week.

Nose pore 2-4 days and face wash 2x a day!

On the days when you're using everything, go in this order:

face wash, scrub, nose, mask.

Do you wash it separately with other clothes?
I know we have different ways of blowing nose with according to each culture.
We japanese do it with tissue these days and I remember we used news papers and got our face stained with paper ink when things were scarce.
But we can't think of blowing our nose into a handkerchief, because it was thought to be something kept as clean as possible. Do you not use paper tissue even these days in blowing your nose?

These days of greater knowledge of global warming and vanishing forests, there is always this dilemma.

Tissues are more hygienic, but more damaging to the environment, because they come from diminishing resources.......... wood/ie, forests.

Baby`s nappies are the same. They used to be made of cotten towelling and washed and used over and over again.........now each single one is sent to landfill after being used once, and try to imagine the billions that are used throughout the world. They will not deteriorate for thousands of years.

Skin on nose gets VERY dry and peels when i wash it?

Every time i wash my face, my nose tends to get extremely dry and the skin starts to come off it. It gets really bad when i use a face wash, but even if i just use water it gets pretty dry and peels a lot.

What is wrong? any suggestions to stop it?

you're probably just a bit dehydrated, or your skin is.

drink more water, of course.

another, natural way to help out is to use honey.
about one teaspoon of honey- rub it all over your face after you are done washing up. leave it on (make sure it gets on your nose!) for about 5-10 minutes.
then, wash it off with tepid, lukewarm water. (no hot or cold). pat your skin dry gently.

honey works as a natural moisturizer, and a very strong one at that.

if you don't have the time for honey, try mixing a glob of petroleum jelly(like vaseline) with some lotion and massaging that into your nose RIGHT AFTER you are done washing. it'll work to keep the moisture in your skin, like the honey.

remember, moisturizers work best when your skin is still slightly damp.

how long do i wait to REALLY wash my face after i get my nose pierced?

i got my nose pierced saturday(6-02) and the man told me about caring for it and what not, but he never said how long to wait before i actually wash it. i mean he said to wipe my face with a soapy towel and avoid my nose, but he never said when i could resume my regular regime. i have incredibly oily skin so i use a neutrogena wash to keep it under control. my face looks really icky since i havent gave it a TRUE washing in three days. is that long enough to wait, or will i have to not wash my face for a longer period?

You can wash your face anytime you feel like it. The only thing you really need to watch out for is getting the product around the jewelry. Pat dry but try not to get around the new piercing so much you don't want to get any bacteria in or around the piercing. And like the other answer be careful you don't want to get the jewelry snagged and accidentally rip it out.

I am getting my nose pierced but ive read things you aren't to let facial wash touch the piercing.
My facial wash is organic and non harsh (doesn't have alcohol in it) is it okay if i was right around the piercing?

The though of not being able to wash my nose isn't too nice.

Also any other tips to give me on getting my nose pierced greatly appreciated and better chance at 10pts.

it shouldnt matter too much after all it is cleaning it.
although till its healed you should use some salt water as often as you can or some piercing colution you can probably buy from wher your getting it done at.

all should be well mines been pierced for 9 years =]

If you find that your nose is shiny within a reasonable amount of time (say, an hour or so) after washing your face, your skintype is probably oily, perhaps combination.

Especially with the summer coming up, I'd recommend using a great lightweight sunblock (MenScience Ti02 won't clog pores or cause greasiness) and use a mattifying cream around your nose and other slick spots (forehead, chin, etc) The best one I've found is from a new brand called Dermelect Cosmeceuticals, and is called
"Pore Revolution & T-Zone Mattifier." You can find both the sunblock and pore revolution online!

A light saline solution is the best thing for your nose - NEVER soap. Soap has harsh chemicals in it, as well as mineral oils and animal fats; not good for a sensitive nose.

I'm thinking of getting a nose job, but I use Proavtic and my face really cleared up. I've heard if you stop using it, you'll break out. I'm wondering if you can wash your face the day that you get your nose job? Or will it hurt too much, or are you even allowed to after that kind of surgery?

Nooo!! the cast shouldn't get wet!! And you will have it on for 7-8 days. The day you will have the surgery you won't even able to stand up, because of the anesthesia hunnie. Pe prepared it's a tough one!

You should not use that face wash on your nose. You can use it everywhere else on your face, but avoid the nose area. Unless you take the stud out. Some people will tell you the best thing for a piercing is soap and water. Dial soap. Some will say peroxide. Some will say alcohol. I just used a little Dial soap and it healed nicely. If I feel that its infected, I would clean it with alcohol.

You do not have to dry everything in that area completely, but I would suggest patting it dry would be fine.

Your stud should not rust. You should use surgical steele studs until your piercing heals. So, no, your stud will never rust. Just think---the nose is not always a dry place...someone thought of this. So, no, it will not rust. Make sure you use surgical steele. Use what you want after it heals. Its your nose, but I would only buy the best.

It will hurt to blow your nose for the 1st week or so, but after that you shouldn't notice the stud or ring at all. Have it long enough, and it will become apart of you.

i have had my nose pirced for about a year now and i still have to be careful i have gone to wash my face with a towel and it has caught onto the material. when you get it pierced they will tell you to clean it will some kind of bacteria cleaner. until it heals i'd suggest not to go around it with the noxzema cause it is pretty strong and also aviod putting any face makeup around it.
