The Brainerd Lakes Blog: Allergy or Sinusitis?

&Nbsp;I am sniffling and sneezing and so are other members in my household but there are differences.  Although a bit tired (probably from lack of sleep) I feel just fine - the others are miserable with higher temps, lethargy, aches and a great desire to sleep (ok I have that too!) The possible culprits are allergies, sinusitis, cold or the flu. Here is some great information from About.com on sorting out an allergy from sinusitis. Ah choo! It's allergy season and it seems like everyone is suffering from a runny or stuffed nose. In fact, a recent survey found that almost 40 percent of American consumers feel just like Snow White's friend, Sneezy, this time of year. But is it really allergies that are making them feel so "sneezy" or something else, like a full blown sinus infection? Each year, 37 million Americans suffer from sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) resulting in nearly 12 million doctor visits. Symptoms of sinus-related conditions can be debilitating for many sufferers. In fact, in a recent survey of 1,008 consumers and 127 physicians, more than one half (54 percent) of consumers said they lost sleep at least twice during allergy season last year due to sinus-related symptoms, causing them to be less alert at work the next day. Twenty-five percent of consumers also reported missing at least 3 days of work or school due to illness during allergy season last year. Experts say it's important patients know that while symptoms may seem similar, there are differences between allergies, a viral infection like a cold, and a bacterial sinus infection because treatment options differ. Fifty-one percent of physicians surveyed said they believe that patients with sinus-related symptoms wait too long before coming in to see them for treatment. Although colds are the most common cause of sinusitis, people suffering from allergies also may be predisposed to the development of sinusitis. Interestingly, in the survey endorsed by the American Academy of Otolaryngology,...

baby cough fever runny nose treatment 5 months . pls help?

i have got and cough.
all my 4 children as well. Elder 6 youngeat 4 months.all of them are Missery. I do not want to give them medicines. NW its 4th day. im confused.

If I understand correct all your child may be having those symptoms repeatedly or through over the last 5 months. I do not think that all had fever for 5 continuous monrhs but there
several cases of fever as well.

This is not so rare.

Now you have shown doctors.
While taking treatment are carefully consider the following aspects.

Keep the house dust free and clean vacuum regularly
Sometimes there are allergies to cow's milk and certain foodstuffs. Talk to your doctor.
Do not expose children to cold.
Do not medicate with antibiotics.Only frequently when the doctor advises.
Using an air purifier and humidity control.
Avoid applications that can cause skin allergy.
Contact with pet urination.

Did they have a cough or wheezing too. Then they may be obtained with asthma.

Obviously your children are subject to allergies years.
Allergies may be due to pollen or housedust or mites, or may be a few reasons undiagnosed.
Does one parent have a history of allergy or asthma.

Usually children get better with age and under the care of a pediatrician, although they will be OK.

When they have the above symptoms with fever, they have a viral or bacterial infection.

Do they have fever and / or mucous is yellow or green? If so they must be seen by a doctor. If not, I would run a humidifier cold and give all the lots, but that of 4 months of fluids especially orange juice. The baby should keep breastfeeding or bottle as often as possible. If this continues, and nobody seems to get better or they get worse, please, take them to the doctor.

what is the best treatment for getting rid of a runny nose?

If you do not like a joke, acting like an ass he please really boring
im gonna b tomorrow fasting and do not know how to stop it.

Honey will help??

Just BLOW!

My Mom Has A Fever, A Cough, And A Runny Nose; Is It Alright For Her To Start Treatment With Doryx?

She's been taking tylenol cold for the past two days and it hasn't really helped so she was wondering if she could take Doryx to help with the infection.
Thanks

See a doctor. I would not take any product containing tylenol considering the recent information concerning its potential negative impact on the liver

Treatment Of A Runny Nose In Dogs?

It sounds like your dog has a bacterial infection (although some viral infection can also cause these symptoms). Dogs don't tend to get minor colds in the same way as humans so runny noses normally mean some kind of respiratory or sinus infection which will need treated with antibiotics from your vet.

Is there anything to do for this runny nose?

My 5 year old son has been to the doctor. They gave him antibiotic and even the nebulizer machine for breathing treatments. Well the chest congestion and cough is gone, but this darn runny nose won't stop. He is a special needs child and can't go to school until the runny nose is gone. Any suggestions??
The stuff coming out of his nose is clear and he has been on the meds over a week now and they aren't helping.

Antihistamines are good for runny nose. Try benadryl or claritin. It dries up the runny nose. I use it with my 3 yr old for allergies and it works. Its good that the mucous is clear which means there is no more infection. Good luck and i hope this helps!

Well a runny nose is the sign that he still has a bit of a cold. give him plenty of fluids, lots of water or juice to drink and hopefully it'll get better. Not much you can do about a runny nose... it has to follow its course...
good luck!

what treatment can clear my son's runny nose which has lasted for three months . his lungs are not infected.?

During the winter, many children have constant runny noses. Just keep telling yourself that this is your child's way of building immunity to germs for his future. In the meantime, you can use saline nose drops to thin the secretions and teach him to blow his nose after using these and running a humidifier in the bedroom where he sleeps. Also, avoiding any cigarette smoke exposure will also help and that includes on people's clothing and hair for those that go outside to smoke and then come back inside where there is a child present. This will go away as his body heals itself.

Sounds like allergies, time to see an allergist.

Why Do I Always Have A Runny Nose?

I always have to blow my nose. It's something I have to do year round. I've talked to doctors, but they keep saying that it's "seasonal" allergies, even when I tell them that I have to blow my nose all the time, all year long.

I always have to have several packs of tissue near me, as I'm always afraid that it'll run out. It's true that it's bad during spring, but it's pretty much always bad.

I'm currently following a pollen desensitizing treatment, but I'm near the end and there still have been no significant improvements (or changements, for that matter). Using those nose sprays doesn't work either.

Anybody have any idea what's wrong and what I can do to stop it. I hate always having to blow my nose. I've had this problem for about 7 years now.

My mum had the same problem. It turned out she had nasal pollops. I can't really tell you much about them. My mum had them quarterised, and this stopped the problem. It might be worth asking your GP?

I think you have a weak immune system. You can strengthen it by exercising regularly, eating well and leading a healthy lifestyle.

My 11 month old daughter has had a cough and a runny nose for 2 months?

She has been on 2 rounds of antibiotics, cough medication, decongestants, breathing treatments and a humidifier. Nothing has helped and Pediatrician is not sure what to do.

Stop all antibiotics continue the breathing treatments and see another dr.

the humidifier you use do you clean it regularly? Sometimes they can harbor bactiria and continue to make them sick.

i would suggest a 2nd opinion of another doctor!!!!!!!

treatments for a runny nose, sore throat, and coughing.?

I feel terrible. I have all these things. It started on thurs. with the sore throat ande then it got worst from there. I'm looking stuff I can buy at Wallgreens or Rite Aid.HELP!!!!

Yes, it's a cold, and you'll just have to let it run its course.

A few things that will help:
1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. A diet consisting of soup, fruit, and other high-water foods would be the best.
2. Take vitamin C supplements. Orange juice also helps.
3. Take zinc tablets. These are available at any chemists. Okay, they don't taste like chocolate truffles, but at least they're taste sweet.
4. Take ginger tea. Boil some ginger shreds in water and add a spot of honey. It'll provide temporary relief to your throat.
5. Stay well rested.

you have a common cold! steam in karvol, take lemsips and ibebrufin (neurfen of similar!) and if u dont get better go 2 ur doctor

My children have been fighting with sinus infections, coughing, runny nose since birth no-one No's the cause?

already taken singular, breathing treatments, nazonex, saline, cough syrup, benedryl-just about every medicine you could think of. They've been to nose-throat and ear specialist same results. I feel no-one is hearing my cry and my children are suffering PLEASE SOMEONE HELP. I only have medicade insurance. My 1 year old has had 3 ear infections and amonia this month alone. all 3 has been diagnosed with asthma but I'm telling you there is something else wrong I just do not know what.My 1 year old don't even know how to breathe out of her nose because it's been clogged for so long.

Honestly I feel our air has changed, I just turned 40 in December and never in my life did I ever experience sinus problems outside of a cold. But ironically after 911 happened, about 2 yrs later me, my husband and now my 72 yr old father all suffer with sinus problems and some sort of allergy. My father was given an inhaler 2 yrs ago because it was so bad that when he would lay down, he couldn't breath- I insisted he tell the doctor to get and ex ray because at one point he had bronchitis and even after that he had a bad dry cough- after having the x-ray they found fluid in his lungs, draining a quart and a half out. Sounds gross I know!!
But his doc told him that for some reason more and more people are coming in with allergies and sinus troubles, that something must have changed in the air.
I believe this is true given that I was never one to ever have any problems, but now as soon as the summer comes to a close, my sinus start to act up- right through to winter then they get better until Spring, that is when it starts up again.
This doesn't help you I am sure, but there isn't a cure for what we are enduring. Only meds to help us through them. You might want to get a humidifier, and maybe even an air purifier for the hallway where the kids sleep. And change the air filter in your heater every 6 months, this will help some too.
Did you hear about the mediorite that came down in peru?
Sickened hundreds of people who went to the site, upper respitory issues, nausea and congestion... makes you stop and think what is really going on with the world these days- more and more illnesses are popping up, and allergy cases in those who never before had them.
Ask the doc about an inhaler if it is safe for the kids to use, if need be find another doc who takes your medicaid and get a second opinion possibly another doctor will have a more effective solution.
Good luck- I know how stressed you must feel and at your wits end with this- wish I could be of more help.

I have been suffering from sinus ever since i can remember, its almost like i have it 24/7 but when i get sick ..i really get sick. I have seen a doctor, and so on but the only thing i can recommend is vicks 24 hr sinex, i find thats the only thing that helps me get through the night. i know of surgery to cure sinus, but other than that i have tried every other alternative. my mum is the same.

my hedgehog has been losing quills and has a runny nose.?

We found my hedgehog (Don) quite early in the evening at the beginning of December and took him home. When we weighed him he was 309grams. He now weighs 518 grams. Recently he has been losing some quills quills and has quite a runny nose. He is still active and eating. What could be causing this and is there any natural treatment for this? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

By the weights that you posted, I am assuming that Don is a wild European Hedgehog and not a domestic African Hedgehog. If it is just a larger African hedgehog that you found I would take him to the vet to get him looked at. It could be many things, some which may even be transmissible to you and your family.

If this is a European hedgehog, he really does belong back in the wild. If he was sick and you took him in to nurse him back to health, you eventually need to re-release him. Due to the fact that he is losing quills and he has a runny nose, I would contact a hedgehog rescue nearby and ask them for assistance. They could give you information for contacting a vet that has experience with wild hedgehogs and more information on the life of hedgehogs in the wild and how it is better for them than inside a house.

Good luck with Don! If you still feel that you'd like a prickly pal in your life, consider getting Don II from a breeder of African hedgehogs from the link below.

Hope this helps!!

Who in the world has a hedgehog??

My cat has runny eyes with green discharge and also a runny nose..

I adopted him as a stray from outside and it's been about 2 and a half months now that I found him and he's been doing well until now. He is a grown cat..not nuetured.. very large and long. haired. so he's eating well and seems to be ok just.. his eyes are very runny and swollen like and his nose is runny also.. I can't afford to take him to the vet due to the dog that I have already and her vet bills are all I can handle right now ! So I'm hoping he will be ok ?? Are these the symptoms of a very sick cat ?? or will he get better without any treatment.

I'm afraid the colored eye discharge is the sign of a bacterial infection and the only way to deal with that is with antibiotics from the vet.

The runny nose might be viral and he doesn't need antibiotics for that. Eye problems really need vet attention. Be sure to check with the vet about what he would charge to see the cat. As a veterinary "frequent flyer" my vets will sometimes give me a break on the costs.

He has a respiratory infection most likely and unlike colds in humans, they can become quite serious in cats. He should get antibiotics from the vet. This should not be an overly expensive vet visit but it is necessary.

why do some people think it is their god-given right to see a doctor whenever they have a runny nose?

i live in canada, and, to make a long story short, i HATE universal healthcare. it's ridiculous. seriously ill peope have to wait months and months for surgery, MRIs, etc. And people arriving in ERs wth deep cuts, heart attacks, and other critical ailments are being forced to wait hours for treatment, even if they can afford better care, because there are very few private hospitals.

i think one of the main factors is because there are too many low income people who dont pay enough taxes and then think its their god given right to see a doctor for every little scrape, and wasting the funding on their lazy selves, and wasting the time of health care professionals.

what do you think?

Welcome to your govts solution to the health care system. I think that in your country it is a "God" or at least a "Governmental" given right. In America we have a triage system to make sure that the runny noses see a nurse practitioner in a Fast Track clinic and the Emergencies are seen in the Emergency Room. Of course there is no perfect health care system and America's doesn't work well all the time. I would hate to know that I pay the taxes you do in your country and still have to wait in line to have my gallbladder removed in an emergency situation. No offense intended but your country's healthcare system is a great example of why socialized medicine does not work. Give us another 15 years and enough Democrat in office and we will be right behind you.

my cat has runny nose and eyes?

She's been this way since even before i got her 4 months ago, she's about 5-6 months old , she's been to the vet several times , she had antibiotics and immune system boosters and she's almost the same, her nose stopped running but not her eyes, not completely , she's hyper active and she seams very healthy except the runny nose , what should i do since her treatment didn't work ?
And also she doesn't want to drink water from the bawl she drinks directly from the faucet i am worried about her not getting enough water, when i get home i turn the faucet on for her , and sometimes she asks for water by climbing on the sink but i would fell better if she would drink from the bawl

Well if the vet has seen her and has given antibiotics and immune system boosters we can assume that she doesn't have FeLuk. Which is good. If your kitty has an upper respiratory issue (a cold) it will take a while to get rid of all the symptoms. With an URI you usually have runny eyes and nose, sometimes sneezing and coughing. It can be worrisome if you have not seen it before. Most of the time it clears itself even without the vets help. give it a least 60 days.

The water issue...seems there are quite a few cats that love the faucet. Try this as an alternative.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EJX R0M
its a touch free adapter around $40. Kitty sticks her nose under the faucet and it turns on automatically.
or try this:
http://www.thepamperedpetmart.com/Mercha nt2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product _Code=DPFW6R1&qts=Affiliate&qtk= 6W6wrj6g
its a drink well. all my cats drink form something like this. check around for the best prices too. Hope that helped.

She could be suffering from allergies. You should really take her to a vet and get her checked.

I have a headache, runny nose, watery eyes...?

I might be coming down with the flu.
What would you recommend as a treatment for me?

Doesn't sound like the flu...the flu is more like stomach upset, nausea, fever, chills. You sound like you have a cold or a virus. I would recommend Advil Cold & Sinus (behind the counter) or the Theraflu drink mix <<that stuff works pretty good.

Hope you feel better!

The doctor! Go to the doctor!

My 6 month old has watery eyes, runny nose, and temp of about 100?

These symptoms all occurred simultaneously. Teething, cold, flu? Anyone out there have a little one that has experienced these symptoms? The nurse at the doctor's office wanted me to bring her in for a Tamiflu (sp?) treatment. I'd rather not do that just yet.

Could be teething.. Can you get a feel of her gums? Also I just thought of this... Has she had any immunizations recently? They can cause them too

you should take your daughter in before it becomes very serious if you go in and find out its no big deal or it is either way you'll be glad you went in before it was 2 late

What could be the cause for a cat's constantly runny nose and sneezing?

I have a 10.5 year old, neutered, strictly indoor, male cat. I've owned him since he was 4 months old. He has been healthy his whole life except for the fact that he does have pica disorder (he tries to ingest non-edible items). About 2 years ago, he started getting a runny nose and he sneezed a lot.
I brought him to the vet and she said that she thought it was simply a cold that formed into an infection. She gave him an antibiotic shot and recommended red light therapy for him. I bought him a red light and he did improve for about 1 month.
The runny nose and sneezing returned and I brought him back to the vet. She said that he has allergies and I shouldn't be concerned unless the mucous turns green or yellow. So I let him be.
Now he is eating fine (no teeth problems), getting around fine, but he still has a runny nose and sneezes! I checked his eyes and ears and they are clear. When he sleeps, he has no wheezing sounds or trouble breathing. But I have to occasionally dab his nose with a tissue every once in awhile.
I know it is not something infectious as I have 2 other cats at home. They are all healthy, receive veterinarian treatment, and are strictly indoors. I'm considering bringing him to another vet for a second opinion.
But in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas what could be causing a mostly clear runny nose and sneezing?
Thanks!

I'd guess it's either herpes or a food/environmental allergy.

Herpes in cats is similar to the herpes virus that causes cold sores in humans. It's symptoms can be runny eyes and nose. Try getting some l-lysine tablets from wherever you buy your vitamins, and crush one of the tablets in his canned food once a day. It can do wonders for cat with herpes (and is harmless if it isn't).

Food allergies can manifest themselves with these same symptoms. Is he getting a food with lots of corn? You can try switching to a food free of corn (you'll need to go to the pet store to get one) and they symptoms may improve. Again - it's harmless (and better for his health) if that's not the case. Food allergies can take years to appear, and they can develop allergies to a food that they have eaten for years. Fish is another common source of allergies in cats.

Environmental allergies can happen in cats, too. I have one cat who gets seasonal allergies, just like humans get hay fever. He's on an antihistamine (ask your vet) and it helps tremendously. He's also got food allergies - no corn, no dairy, no fish.

I've never heard of a red light therapy - but of course I haven't heard of everything! I'll have to look that one up, but I'm sort of curious as to why she didn't recommend the l-lysine first, before something out of the ordinary.

You're doing all the right things keeping on top of his health! I think you should ask another vet for a second opinion!

Bird flu and see a doctor - quick - haven't you seen all this on TV etc. telling you if you have symtoms such as yours get medical help 'straight away' what are you doing wasting time on here for - when your that sick.

you might have scoliosis a rare spine disease but it is curable and you might have a sinus infection!

8 month old with long time conjestion runny nose and now cough!?

Awhile back I brought my son in for a stuffy nose and a little wheezing..the doctor per scribed me amoxicillan and that worked for a while and then the green nose and chest conjestion came back and he perscribed him something called cefedrin which really didnt do any good because what he had apparently wasnt bacterial....Now he is coughing really bad and still has his runny nose and chest conjestion..I have tried putting him in the steamy bathroom, we have humidifier in his room and also he has a nebulizer which i give him treatments...he just perscribed me another type of inhalent called flovent but he has not diagnosed him wtih asthma though....Im just so frustrated as he's so little and I hate seeing him this way... I dont know what else to do for his chest and nose...I even tried the saline and bulb suction but I really dont get much out because its plugged up too far and I dont want to aggervate his nasal passages! We are traveling to Boston for Thanksgiving and i just dont want him to be like this when we travel :( Also he tested neg for flu twice
I just came from the doctor today he had a fever this morning but not by the time i got to the doctor...The fever could be from his teething too...been to doctor 3 times with in the last month.

Does he have a fever? If he does go to a doctor. You should do that anyways though. Also, next time he cries, check if he doesn't have a lot of tears, or no tears at all, which is a sign of dehydration.

Once antibiotic treatment is started, how long does it take for the dog's KC symptoms to improve?

My dog got an antibiotic injection at the emergency vet and was prescribed Baytril and a cough suppressent for a kennel cough infection (apparently caused by strep bacteria.) This was on Sunday, but he still has the symptoms. He's improved a bit, but still has a cough (despite the cough medicine) and has a runny nose.

We're going back to the vet tommorrow morning just to check up on him, but I want to know how much longer till he starts feeling much better?

Are you saying he tested positive for strep? That is actually better news than some other viral conditions. You might want to see a doctor for a prophylactic round of antibiotics too along with the rest of your family.

Kennel Cough lasts up to 2 mo. But if it is strep, you should see improvement sooner.

I understand that there are more than one kind of germ that causes "kennel cough". The one we usually hear about is Bordatella. I'd expect, with that one, that he would start feeling better at least within a week. But with strep I don't know. But you know how you are with some colds - you know you are over them long before the nagging cough goes away - sometimes the symptoms last long after the disease is kaput. I hope your baby is feeling much better soon.
